In 1995 when I returned to start APC, an abandoned housing project caught my attention. It was one project I had worked on when I first started work in 1984. Four years later, together with some friends, I took over the projects, bring back life into it and a small cozy community grew. Helped by the success, I went on to manage a few more house for others. This time around my luck is mixed. I now fully realise the lesson a friend once taught me. Do a house for them, you will either end the best of friend or the worst of enemy.  The involvement in these houses mark  my re-education in construction. I learnt first hand the pain of the tradesmen, the agony of the owner and the frustration of the architect. I lost some money too but shrugged it off  in the name of education. It was the kind of education no university can teach. That is what I want to share with all of you, the young architects especially, for eventually you will be a house owner too.

R IS FOR ROOF
The crown of the house. Also the cause of never ending raindrops falling on you head, spoiling your grand plaster ceiling in turn. If possible avoid multiple valley roof design. 

R IS FOR ROOM
How big? How many? What for?

S IS FOR SECURITY
Concern for security has often turn a house into a cage, complete with alarm system, security grills and expensive locks. To keep the intruder out, we lock-up ourselves within. Rethinking the concept of security may help make our house safer by not being un-necessarily a prison.

S IS FOR STORE
Required by our obsession with old things. If we can learn to give  kids tricycles, potty toilets, old clothes, old books and all those old things away we can do with a little store and use rooms for what rooms are. 

S IS FOR STAIRCASES
That diagonal thing taking you from lower to upper floor. Safety and comfort is paramount to beauty. The best staircase must be well lighted and ventilated. Climbing a stair is an aerobic activity using more oxygen and without proper ventilation, we may tire quickly. Best staircase design should be at 30 degrees, with a wide 300  (12 inches) tread size and average of 150 (6 inches) consistent step heights. Make sure it's wide enough for moving the furniture and the material not easily slippery.
