Arkitek Punca Cipta
A 50 person architecture consultancy firm based in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. Satu lagi khidmat awam sumbangan dari Arkitek Punca Cipta  

Dalam tahun 1995, bila saya pulang untuk memulakan APC, satu projek terbengkalai menarik perhatian saya. Projek yang saya terlibat sama waktu mula bekerja dalam tahun 1984. Empat tahun kemudian, dengan beberapa rakan, projek itu kami ambil alih, pulihkan dan sebuah komuniti kecil yang selesa berjaya diujudkan. Kejayaan itu menggalakkan saya merekabentuk dan mengurus beberapa rumah lain. Nasib saya bercampur. Saya faham sepenuhnya ajaran dari seorang kawan lama. Binakan rumah untuk mereka, akhirnya sama ada anda menjadi kawan yang paling akrab atau musuh yang paling utama. Terlibat dalam rumah-rumah ini ini mengajar semula saya segala-galanya tentang pembinaan. Saya belajar keperihan tukang-tukang, marah dan geram pemilik rumah dan kekecewaan seorang arkitek.   Inilah yang ingin saya kongsi dengan anda semua terutama arkitek-arkitek muda kerana anda juga akan satu hari menjadi pemilik sebuah kediaman.

B is for BOLA
2001 will always be remembered by the people of Terengganu. For the first time ever, after 42 years, the state football team brought home the coveted Malaysia Cup. Victory made sweeter by beating Perak, the team that denied Terengganu their glory in penalty shoot-out in 1998. Denied the positive press report in the week run-up to the final, dubbed 'si-miskin' (the poor) and promised none of the material gain made to the other team, the bringing home of the Cup mark a revival of Terengganu spirit and determination of fighting and making it against all odds.

B is for BOAT-MAKING


B is for BEACHES
If sunny white sandy beaches with clear water is what you look for, how about 420 kilometers of it, not counting the many splendid islands off its coast. That's how blessed this state is. The best? Can't really decide on one. Aziz M Osman, Malaysia's famous film director chose the rocky beach of Kemasek in his famous 1988 movie FENOMENA starring Ramona Rahman and M. Nasir.

C is for CENDOL
That iced cold  green thing in coconut milk with a dash of brown sugar liquid. You can find it almost everywhere in town. Our favorite is the one by a motorbike peddlar stationed under the tree in front of Bumputera Commerce Bank Taman Sri Intan. In hotel - don't bother, it's probably cooked to the point of the coconut milk turning into oil (pecah minyak in the cook's lingo). I've experienced it once in one of the famous hotel in town, so if you crave for it, find it on the street.

D is for DURIAN
The thorny king of the fruit. Found all over Malaysia in the different time of the seasons. Its taste said to differ from a region to another and made better by the age of the trees. Terengganu's famed durian is found in Kijal. But commercialism has reared its ugly head in this trade, many a durian from other areas, including the tasteless durian siam (Thai durians) has been made to pass as one. How to know the difference? I can't. Not even after the many years eating one. Best option is to buy and and eat it there. After all you can't stand the smell of it in your car. Not for a long drive on a sunny day anyway.


E is for EKOR
You can think of Sup Ekor (then go to S). But if '4 - nombor ekor' comes to mind when you're feeling lucky, sorry its no longer sold here- not after the new government in late 1999. We were  told that the illegal ones is available. But we can't help you there.

H is for HAI PENG KEDAI KOPI

In Cukai, and if you happen to be near the Centerpoint, follow your nose to the aroma of coffee, walk down the five-foot way along the shops and you can't miss the definitive 'cafe'. Been around since more than 30 years ago it still serve the favorite aromatic kopi Hai-Peng (best taken black and 'kau-kau'), and roti sekaya. The enterprising new generation (oversea educated I heard) is marketing the shop well, you can get the ground coffee in nice box and sachets too. My personal memory goes back a long way when my father took me there to buy aiskrim potong. (They don't have the ice-cream anymore).

K is for Keropok Lekor

If you don't take home the keropok lekor after the Terengganu trip, friend's don't love you. That's how much the sausage like keropok lekor means to people. If you can't take the boiled or the fried one, then at least settle for the crackers. It makes great gift. Available on the stalls along the main road from Kuala Kemaman right to Besut, just look for the stalls with the big iron pots with steaming wisp of fishy aroma. Our favourite is Keropok Lekor 007 (after Bond) in Cendering. Look for the rows of car on the road side just after Masjid Terapung. That's how popular it is. You can't miss it. If you can't get it there, head to Losong or much further up to Batu Rakit. For the cracker (keropok keping) version, the best is keropok ikan parang, made only by a Chinese keropok maker in Paka. The rest of keropok keping made from tamban, selayang (fish types for the uninitiated) etc. are available everywhere.

L is for LEMANG

N is for NASI DAGANG
Even more than the keropok, this plain and slightly glutinous rise dish usually taken as breakfast is a must for everyone. Named 'Dagang' (stranger/loner) after a single tuna curry accompanying it unlike the many condiments accompanying 'nasi berlauk', nasi dagang is available in stalls and hotel's coffee house. Because of difficult cooking process, most hotels took their supply from the stalls too, so taste is rather 'standardised' with the price four times higher.

The good one is available at Kak Pah in Medan Selera Batu Buruk, Batu Enam, and the few stalls in Cendering. Our favorite, not only by the taste, but the way it is served by a lady sitting on a platform is at Nasi Dagang Mak Ngah in Cendering. Friend endearingly called it Nasi Dagang Mak Cik Bersila. For those who frequent her wooden stall before, it's now moved to a spankingly nice pink building close by. She still sits on the platform (stainless steel this time) though.

O IS FOR OIL
The oil fields are here, off Terengganu's coast. The petroleum industry is here in Kerteh. If you happen to drive to Terengganu at night, the great couldron of fire lighting-up the sky, and the rows of gigantic steel structures and tanks are what enrich this nation for a some time now. At least we can take pride for contributing so-much to this great nation of ours.

O IS FOR OTAK-OTAK
One fish based delicacy found in its original form is otak-otak. Slice of fish marinated and soaked in specially prepared coconut and spice paste, placed in coconut leaf then cooked over charcoal fire. The taste is heaven - if you love it hot. The best is available in Kuala Kemaman in that one famous stall that used to be featured in newspaper. The demand is so good that you can't find it left if you are late even though consumption per customer is sometime limited.
